Heidecksburg Castle – The mighty, three-winged Baroque castle
The Heidecksburg Castle in Rudolstadt is the most spectacular baroque castle in Thuringia. Situated on a mountain top, the castle is visible from miles around, appearing as a crown above the former town of aristocratic residence. In the 13th century the Earl of Orlamünde built a castle in Rudolstadt, which was captured in 1334 under occupation of the Earl of Schwarzburg. From 1571 onwards, Rudolstadt was a site of aristocratic residence; at the same time work began to build a representative castle.
